Smithers, B.C., poet wins emerging writers award

Emily McGiffin, a 28-year-old writer from Smithers, B.C., has won the Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers. The $5,000 award, given to an unpublished writer under age 35 for a sample of poetry, was presented Wednesday evening in Toronto.

McGiffin, who is working toward an M.Sc. in rural development at the University of London, has twice been shortlisted for the CBC Literary Awards. Her poetry has also appeared in the Malahat Review and she writes nonfiction for Small Farm Canada.

The award is named after the late poet Bronwen Wallace, who mentored many young writers. Winners often attract the attention of publishers and agents, according to Don Oravec, executive director of the Writers' Trust of Canada, which administers the award.
