Abstract

First Alliance Church (FAC) located in Calgary, Alberta, hosted action research that sought to foster cross-ministry alignment through the recruiting, training, and mobilizing (RTM) of volunteers. The focus was on equipping staff to develop the essential skills to recruit and develop volunteers. Organizational implications and external factors to this project were considered. The study used the qualitative research methodologies of a focus group and Open Space. Academic literature reviewed addressed volunteer organizations, personnel systems, organizational care, and volunteer development. Findings were around what the staff struggle with and what they would like to have available for volunteer recruitment and development. Recommendations to the organization include suggested training themes for staff and strategies to create volunteer momentum throughout FAC.
